James T. Fields — 17 Sep. 1861
To JAMES T. FIELDS
September 17, [1861], Wheeling
I think you are very kind, Mr Fields. I wish the time would come when I could oblige you. I feel ashamed of myself about the name— hereafter you shall christen everything I write—and I am still more ashamed that the divisions are so long. Why did you not leave it in five? When you are so courteous, I feel as if I had been a bear.
“Write for the Atlantic.” I surely will as long as you will allow me, but I had the fancy about the English magazine and hope to accept your aid some day. Our eastern mail is running right now so please direct to me here— If anybody says anything very good or very bad about the story of today, won’t you tell me?
Yours sincerely,
R. B. Harding
Margaret!— Is the proof reader quite killed? That’s one good thing. I hope he has no ghost.
