James T. Fields — 19 Dec. 1861
To JAMES T. FIELDS
December 19, [1861], Wheeling
Mr. Fields
I did not keep the story for alteration, but sent it to the mail on the day I promised. I am sorry if it is lost as I made no copy. I left it to a friend to direct and probably he omitted the number and street or addressed it to the firm instead of you. The name of it was John Lamar.[1]
Not hearing from you about the “Continental” I declined writing for it thinking that was what you would advise.[2] Won’t you write immediately & tell me if you have yet found the story?
Yours
R.B.H—
Notes
“John Lamar” would appear in the Atlantic Monthly in April 1862.
