James T. Fields — 28 Sep. 1861

To JAMES T. FIELDS
September 28, 1861

Mr. Fields

I am sorry the story will be so tedious, everybody will be tired–you, too. I would have taken more pains if I had thought it would be so long.  Could you find out for me, please, how many ms pages went into the October no.?  I want--“a start”.  Thank you about the English letter, and very many thanks for the offered books. I don’t know what is a good way. Some friends of mine were in Boston last week but I do not know of any one else going. So I am afraid I must be grateful for your intention, and I am sorry, for I like to receive presents from some people— and I always enjoy ‘Ticknor & Field’s’ new books.

My regards to Mrs. Fields and please tell her that I do indeed hope to visit Boston some day but I cannot tell when I can leave home now. Not until the war is over. So I fear I must remain for a long time here and yours invisibly
