James T. Fields — 30 Jul. 1861
To JAMES T. FIELDS
July 30, [1861], Wheeling
Mr. Fields
I send the ms. by today ‘s mail.[1] Read it in a real July humour,—please—for I meant you to like it.
Perhaps the name promises too much for so simple a story, if so, alter it.
If I could have dared write a true history of today! But even in its poorest phrases, I was afraid to touch forbidden subjects so just the husk of the thing was left, of course.
Will you thank Mrs. Fields for her letter?
Yours,
Rebecca B. Harding—
