James T. Fields — 31 Oct. 1861
To JAMES T. FIELDS
Oct 31– 1861, Wheeling
Mr Fields.
Thank you very much. Both checks came safely. I will write a receipt on the other side. I have not yet begun the short story being worried about other things but will tomorrow.
I hope sincerely the disaster at Edwards Ferry[1] did not touch you personally. God grant the war may never be to you in Boston, what it is to us here.
Yours truly.
