Annie Adams Fields — 15 May 1862
To ANNIE ADAMS FIELDS
May 15, [1862], Wheeling
Certainly my dear Mrs Fields. If I go I will go to you first.[1] Thank you for telling me exactly what you would like. If I can come I will be there the first or second week in June. But I am not very sanguine about going at all from home this summer owing to my father’s health,[2] which is so uncertain as to prevent my making even positive engagements. I mean to hope for the best however and if the minor trouble of sufficient escort can be surmounted will go directly from Baltimore to you. I write in haste to catch the mail.
Yours very sincerely
R.B. Harding
Notes
Jessie Benton Frémont and Fields were competing for the first visit from RHD. She would ultimately split her visits: first to the Frémonts' home, then the Fieldses', and back to the Frémonts'.
